Top 10 Natural Cold & Flu Remedies

Top 10 Cold and Flu Remedies:

*Probiotics: Choose one that is refrigerated and doesn’t have added sugar! (Or make your own with our recipe.)

*Garlic: Take as a supplement when your energy starts to feel low. Garlic will give you an immediate boost of immunity.

*Elderberry Syrup: Packed with anti-oxidants, elderberries are a popular choice for kids. (And adults cause it tastes incredible!)

*Apple Cider Vinegar: A natural probiotic when made at home.

*Vit C: Take up to 10,000 mg per day of Vitamin C to kick any cold or flu down.

*Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide in ears: This is a great tip to remember. Just a few drops in the ears can eliminate any virus that is airborne.

*Oil of Oregano: This one takes a hit to the taste buds if you aren’t an oregano fan. I add it to my daily herbal tea when needed. Save this remedy for the colds and viruses that have you feeling a bit chilled.

*Eucalyptus (external only!): Make an herbal steam with eucalyptus and other essential oils to steam out the stuffed nose.

*Peppermint: Nothing soothes my sore throat like a cup of peppermint tea. Add a touch of raw honey and lemon, and your sore throat will adios.

*Vit D: Take as a supplement, or get your Vitamin D naturally from stinging nettle tea or mushrooms.

Naturally Increase Metabolism with Essential Oils

Did you know that there are essentials oils to increase metabolism? There are a few.

Please note: Be cautious when using essential oils internally. There is a lot of money being fueled behind the internal use of essential oils. Personally, I refrain. Using one drop of essential oil is like drinking 50 cups of tea from the plant you are ingesting. That calls for caution. Internal use of essential oils can cause what is called a healing crisis. They can cause your body to detox too quickly, and spur flu like symptoms and blood toxicity. (Think Amy Winehouse. Her death was caused from detoxing too quickly without medical help.) This can can happen to anyone, not just drug users.

However, the external use of essential oils, with a carrier oil, like grapeseed, castor, or olive oil can offer all the healing properties the plant without the danger zone of internal use. To use, add a few drops to your carrier oil and apply where needed. Grapeseed and castor oil in particular will carry the essential oil deep into the tissues without any effect to the digestive tract where most toxicity lies.

Boost Your Metabolism with Essential Oils:
Grapefruit: I’m sure you’ve heard of the grapefruit juice detox? Using the essential oil in a carrier oil can help decrease cellulite and stubborn far. If I were going to use grapefruit internally, I’d use fresh juice only, not an essential oil.

Peppermint: Peppermint will increase circulation and bring a gentle detox to arms, especially. Internally, peppermint tea infusion is a great way to gently stimulate metabolism.

Orange: Sweet orange is one of my favorite essential oils to use. I add sweet orange to my castile soap and use it daily. It is refreshing and a gently stimulates the metabolism. Internal use of orange should only be done with fresh juice or a sweet orange leaf tea.

Rosemary: Rosemary will brighten up your shower! Use rosemary in your carrier oils for external application and you’ll feel your energy change. Rosemary is known to bring mental clarity and help concentration.

Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus is very stimulating and will bring your metabolism up as well as your detoxification. Only a couple drops will make a huge difference in your metabolism boosting carrier oil application.

My Metabolism Boosting Moisture Blend Recipe:

2 oz of castor oil

2 oz of grapeseed oil

2 drops of grapefruit essential oil

2 drops of peppermint essential oil

3 drops of orange essential oil

1 drop of rosemary essential oil

1 drop of eucalyptus essential oil

Shake and apply. The blend of oils will absorb wonderfully into the skin, leaving no residue.

Caution: When using orange essential oil externally, do not go into the sun after. For some people, it will cause burning.

Cleavers: A Powerhouse Weed, How to Make Medicine with Cleavers

Do you know how to use cleavers as plant medicine?

See the sticky little fibers?

Cleavers have this indescribable sticky property to them. You know how grasshoppers land on you and they have those little suction cups that almost hurt your skin? That is what cleavers are like except there are no suction cups. They are just immensely sticky and wrap themselves around other plants, eventually choking them out. This sticky feeling is really little bristles that hook themselves onto anything near it. Cleavers grow like a vine and will crawl on everything in your shade garden.

Living in a densely wooded area myself, means lots of cleavers to find from spring til fall.

However, even though cleavers are a bit of a pest to the traditional gardener, they are a gem to the herbal gardener! Healing properties of cleavers are so incredible that the pharmaceutical companies are now finding interest in those properties.

I personally use cleavers as a detox agent. It has a mild laxative property that I will give my kids when a virus comes calling to keep everything working efficiently while moving that virus right along. It also stimulates the lymphatic system and is often used as an infusion. I personally use it in tincture form and add it to a base herbal infusion our family drinks daily.

Cleavers have some history in being used for cancer, skin conditions, urinary problems, kidney problems, and even on nursing pets with swelling. Cleavers can be used fresh as a poultice for inflammation, or dried for a number of herbal applications.

Chickweed: Not an Ordinary Weed! Learn to Make Chickweed Medicine

Chickweed Herbal Mentoring Lesson: Learn how to use chickweed in simple herbal remedies.

Do you have this tiny green growing near you? This is the one plant I get the most excited about when I see it coming up in both the Spring and Fall. You may want to try it and see why chickens love it so intensely.

Are you going to learn how to use chickweed in simple herbal remedies? Here’s a rundown:

Chickweed (Stellaria media) is a member of the Caryophyllaceae, or carnation, family Chickweed is native to European regions but has long been widely available in the wild and cultivated in other temperate locations.

The Stellaria media or common chickweed belongs to about 25 species including some native varieties in North America, growing abundantly in the wild which are closely related to but lacks the nutritional value and medicinal effectiveness of the common chickweed.

Chickweed is an annual herb, widespread in temperate regions, growing in large, dense patches. Chickweed grows only a few inches from the ground creeping and forming dense mats. The creeping stems have pubescent or hairs only on one side alternating after every node. When the stem is broken it has no milky sap unlike its relatives where the stems are completely covered with hair and has milky sap. The roots are shallow and fibrous. Chickweed leaves are bright green, opposite, simple, broadly oval, about an inch apart in the stem and usually less than 1 inch long. Chickweeds have small, white, 5 petal star shaped flowers that bloom during spring.

Common chickweeds are edible and considered very nutritious. The common name came from the herb’s appeal to chickens. Common chickweed is used as leaf vegetable in salads.

I personally love chickweed so much that I dream about the first crop of chickweed throughout winter. It is one of my absolute favorite greens grown. There is a light cucumber taste and it literally pops in your mouth for incredible savoring. If you ever have an upset stomach due to a heavy meal, chickweed is the remedy you want on hand. A handful of chickweed will calm your digestives and move things right along.

Chickweed is also my personal go to for stinging nettle stings. When you are out harvesting your nettles this Spring, take note of where the chickweed patch is. They are usually not too far apart.

You can make a chickweed tincture (using vodka, everclear, or vinegar of your choice). Some swear that this tincture will help them lose weight. A dropperful per day could do the trick.

Nutritional Value Of Chickweed

Ascorbic-acid, Beta-carotene, Calcium, Coumarins, Genistein, Gamma-linolenic-acid, Flavonoids, Hentriacontanol, Magnesium, Niacin, Oleic-acid, Potassium, Riboflavin, Rutin, Selenium, Triterpenoid saponins, Thiamin, and Zinc.

Other Chemical Constituents

Saponin glycosides, Coumarins and hydroxycoumarins, Flavonoids, Carboxylic acids, Triterpenoids, Vitamin C, about l50-350mg per l00g.

Kidney And Liver Tonic

Common chickweed has long been used in folkloric medicine as tonic to cleanse the kidney and liver. Chickweed can be eaten raw mixed with salad or prepared and taken as a tea infusion.

Treatment Of Skin Problems

Among the many claimed health benefits from chickweed is its ability to heal skin wounds. It is used as a poultice to treat boils, cuts, burns, abscesses and ulcers. Chickweed is also used to treat itchiness associated with eczema and psoriasis. Dry chickweed to make an infused oil, and then a salve for skin problems.

Anti-Inflammatory And Pain Reliever

Another health benefit from Chickweed is it ability to act against inflammation and pain. It is used to treat rheumatism, arthritis and menstrual pain. You’ll want to use fresh, raw chickweed in your salad or dried chickweed in an herbal tea infusion when it is out of season. I keep a tincture on hand of fresh chickweed that I use as an anti-inflammatory when needed in a pinch. It works very quickly. (You can triple this tincture/extract for a more powerful boost.)

Health Benefits For Stomach Problems

Chickweed is also used to treat constipation, upset stomach and to promote digestion. Making an herbal infusion tea will be your best bet.

Chickweed For Lung Problems

Chickweed is also used to treat asthma and other respiratory problems such as couch and colds. It is believed that the vitamin C in Chickweed can help boost body resistance and can even be used to treat scurvy. However, if you have a ragweed allergy, you may want to avoid chickweed. It is part of the ragweed family.

Interactions and Cautions

Chickweed is considered safe for most adults when taken by mouth. If you have a ragweed allergy, you’ll want to avoid. It could worsen symptoms.

No sufficient studies have been made to determine potential side effects.

Use during pregnancy and breast feeding is discouraged.

How to Make an Herbal Salve

How to Make an Herbal Salve

Step 1: First you must have the infused oil ready. (Either hot or cold method is fine, directions below.)

Step 2: On the lowest temperature possible, begin to add beeswax pellets to your heated oil. They should take awhile to melt down and disperse. Slowly add more beeswax and more beeswax until you’ve reached the consistency you prefer for your salve.

Step 3: Then pour in chosen containers and let set up and cool.

Step 4: If you want to add essential oils to your salves, add them after you’ve poured and stir with a popsicle stick or something small. (Heat can disrupt the essential oil’s purpose.)

*Did you know lip balms are just salves in a lip container? Try it!

~Secret Tip Alert~

Salve Making Freezer Spoon Test

When you are making salves or ointments, before you get started, throw a couple spoons in the freezer, on a plate.

Use these frozen spoons to check the consistency of your salve as you add your beeswax at the melting stage! If you’ve added a few rounds of beeswax and you aren’t sure if you have the right consistency, dip a frozen spoon in, put it back in the freezer. Wait a few moments, and check it. Is it smooth enough? Is it thick enough?

Make the necessary adjustments and test, again. Remember, there is no right or wrong. If it turns out a little too hard, you can reheat and add more oil. Remember to jot down some notes so you know what you prefer best! (This is the best part of making your own medicine!)

Cold Oil Infusion Method

A cold infused oil is simply a carrier oil with plant material in it. The oil extracts the properties of the plant over time, without heat. This is a common method for topical herbal massage oils, the beginning of some salves, and some cooking oils (like flavored olive oils).

The method is simple. You place your herbs in a clean container or jar, pour oil over them, and let them sit for a minimum of 2 weeks out of light.

Always used dried plant material for herbal oils. Fresh plant material contains water, and will cause your oil to mold in a short amount of time. So if you choose to use fresh plant material, know that your oil has a quick expiration date.

Great carrier oil choices: Grapeseed, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Emu Oil, and just about any other oil that has a stable shelf life.

*Please refrain from using olive oil if you plan on making a salve. Olive oil is not a good solvent when heat is applied. The oil will break down and your herbal remedy will not be nearly as effective.

Warm Oil Infusion Method

A hot infused oil is plant material used in oil, but a low heat is used. This is a common practice for salve making or when you want a specialized cooking oil, like garlic coconut oil for sautéing.

Keep the temperature very low. Many herbalist use a double boiler. I personally do not go to that trouble. I use vision ware (glass pots) on the lowest setting possible. (You may want to use a hot plate with controls if you have gas only to control the heat, or use the double boiler method.)

Do NOT fry your plant material.

Some have successfully used a crock pot. I’ve tried it, but all of my crock pots are run too hot for the proper temp control. I always end up with fried herbs. (YUK)

And if you do fry your plant material… just laugh. It happens to the best of us. Start over. I dare you to take a picture and brag about your herb fry below! Haha.

Carrier Oils for Warm Infusions: I personally only use either coconut or avocado oil. Both oils are stable under heat and can retain the medicinal properties of the plants.

Bleeding Heart: How to Make Medicine from Bleeding Heart Plant

Make bleeding heart plant remedies and medicine for calming nerves and settling grief. Not to be mistaken by the popular bright pink ornamental sold in garden nurseries, wild grown bleeding hearts, as pictured above, are the medicinal variety this article is about.

Bleeding Hearts are native to the Pacific Northwest and love to pop up under big fir trees. Most people know the Bleeding Heart hybrid one can buy at the nursery, which is not the quite the same plant I’m speaking of. I’m writing about Dicentra formosa.

Bleeding Hearts like acidic soil and shade.

The roots are the most medicinal of the plant, but I tend to use a whole plant when I make medicine.

If you are going to harvest Bleeding Heart, please do so after they have seeded and just before the leaves turn brown in the fall.

Bleeding Heart roots can be dried, or used fresh in tincture.

Healing Properties of Bleeding Heart

Bleeding heart is considered to be a general tonic and good for calming nerves. I personally have found that it is great medicine to calm overwhelming grief and I’m betting that is where the name originates. One can use it as a pain remedy and I’ve read it is great for toothaches and mouth ulcers.

I tincture bleeding hearts and sometimes I’ll add it to an infused oil for a calming skin salve.

Next time you see a patch of Bleeding Hearts, take a moment to revel in the power of this simple plant.

Heart Healthy Snack: Pistachios

Pistachios had been linked in previous studies to lowering bad cholesterol, and a new study reported by Science Daily says they also increase antioxidant levels in the bloodstream. Antioxidants are molecules that prevent oxidation damage to other molecules.

Oxidation damage may be a source of serious illness and disease. Low levels of antioxidants in the blood may cause what is called "oxidative stress." Oxidative stress can lead to the dying off of good cells needed to function. It is still unclear in science whether antioxidant levels are associated with degenerative diseases. Penny Kris-Etherton, a Penn State professor of nutrition and head of the new pistachio study, doesn't believe science yet understands antioxidants. "The antioxidant story is very disappointing to the scientific community," said Kris-Etherton in the Science Daily pistachio report.

Pistachios are high in lutein, beta carotene, and Vitamin E. All three of these important vitamins are oil soluble. Oil soluble vitamins are important to health because they are stored in tissues longer and released at a slower rate than water soluble vitamins. Pistachios are also excellent sources of bone building copper, manganese, and phosphorous along with heart healthy potassium and magnesium. Pistachios are the only nut to contain the two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin.

In this new study, researchers gave 2 groups with the same base diet, differing amounts of pistachios. One group received 1.5 ounces of pistachios daily while the other received 3 ounces each day. Both groups had increased lutein, beta carotene, and Vitamin E with all participants decreasing their bad cholesterol levels after the study.

Another heart healthy benefit to these smiling nuts, as they are commonly referred to as, is the presence of the amino acid, arginine. Arginine benefits people who suffer from angina and those who have undergone serious trauma. Arginine is an important factor in cell division, removing ammonia from the body, releasing hormones, and helping maintain a healthy immune system.

A one ounce serving of pistachios has 160 calories. Pistachios have proven to be an excellent source of vitamin B6, fiber, thiamin, and phosphorus. Eating nuts in general is associated with a lower body mass index, and no weight gain was measured by adding the daily intake of pistachios during the study.

Choosing pistachios wisely is the key to obtaining the maximum health benefits. Pistachios are often roasted and heavily salted, making those varieties a danger for those watching sodium levels. Finding a source of unsalted, raw pistachios, could be a great long term asset to one's health plan.

Adding healthy pistachios to your diet is easy. They are a tasty snack by themselves or you can add them to salads, smoothies, or desserts. Organic pistachio nut butter offers the ease of being creative while adding antioxidants to your diet.

Celery & Food Dye Experiment

This is a picture of a simple science experiment. Look at how different food coloring changes the color of the celery plant, especially the red 40. It actually killed the celery plant in just a day. Red 40 is in a lot of candy and processed foods that we all ingest daily. This photo was taken just at the 24 hour mark.

8 Herbs for Hormone Balance and Natural Fibroid Treatment: Top Hormone Solutions

Our diet dramatically effects our hormones. Coffee, meat, and even a few vegetables like soy and anything in the nightshade family can wreak havoc on hormones and cause a slew of issues, one being uterine fibroids. (Make sure to check out the Top Hormone Solutions list at the end of this blog post.)

There are herbs that can help balance estrogen levels and allow fibroids to shrink on their own, over time. Fibroids are usually harmless, but can be alarming when first discovered as they can be the size of a grapefruit and put pressure on surrounding organs, like the bladder. Smaller fibroids are rarely noticed.

Hormone Balancing Herbs

Reishi Mushroom is a potent cellular antioxidant and an adaptogen that fights the aging process. Traditional Medicinals makes a simple Reishi Mushroom tea that is quite nice to sip or make as a sun tea in the summer.

Milk Thistle is clinically shown to heal the liver and help it regenerate. If only I had known this as a kid when I was paid by my Grandfather to chop down every milk thistle on our Midwest family farm. Milk thistles would take over entire pastures and crops in the span of a year. I prefer to take milk thistle as a tea or a capsule supplement if I feel I a quick bit of it. Take note that milk thistle is also safe for dogs.

Maca root is a great source of cellular energy and has been shown to have benefits for reproductive health. I like to use Maca root as a supplement to my smoothies.

Dong Quai supports the immune system and lowers inflammation. It has also been shown improve blood flow and hormonal balance. I use this full spectrum herb capsule.

Holy Basil balances the stress hormone, cortisol. It is easily grown indoors and smells decadent. This is my favorite tea.

Ashwagandha is another adaptogen that reduces cortisol but can also feel like a stimulant to some people who are sensitive to it. It is a powerful source of energy and nutrients. I like this source because it utilizes ginger and black pepper to make it more effective.

Amla Berry preserves collagen in the skin and tones all tissues. It is beneficial to the outside view of aging as well as the inside tone of tissues and organs. This is my favorite organic source.

Even though it's not an herb, Reiki has proven to have balancing effects to keep hormone's balanced and energy moving smoothly. Secrets of Sedona offers long distance Reiki starting at just $10 per session with outstanding results!

Yoga has been an asset in my own hormone balance. Stretching in each direction, creating balance helps the brain stay balanced along with your body. Easy Plant Based Replacements: Vegan Replacement Foods

These replacements are from this book. Click to browse.
It is pretty easy to eat a plant based diet with all of the replacements that are now available in stores and online. Here are the most simple ways to make your favorite recipe, plant based and healthier.

Milk: Milk is probably the easiest to replace. There are so many options available that it is really about finding the one that works for you. Personally, I prefer unsweetened almond milk. The vanilla flavor is too sweet and the sweetened one is like drinking a pack of sugar to me.

Other options are soy milk, cashew milk, rice milk, coconut milk and some will be refrigerated while others require no refrigeration until after you open and use it. This is a fun testing period when you get to find out what you really like. You may find that you like a couple different ones for different purposes. Or, you may even prefer to make it yourself with a blender! It is super easy and certainly worth the effort of avoiding added chemicals and preservatives.

Creamer: There are many plant based, vegan creamers available for your coffee or your cream sauces. Look online and find the options you think you’ll be interested in before you go to your store. If they don’t have a good option available, you’ll know what to ask for.

Cheese: Finding a cheese replacement or substitution is something that will be important to some people and not important at all to others.

For cream cheese, I love the Go Veggie brand. I cannot taste any difference between regular cream cheese and this one. Tofutti has a great one that is readily available in the tiniest supermarkets.

Shredded Cheese can be a bit more difficult if you are trying for the same pizza taste. Daiya brands are available and some people love the product. Go Veggie brand is available but there is some confusion as to whether or not it is even plant based, so make sure to read the label and know that lactose free does not mean vegan.

Cheese slices now have a tasty replacement, finally! Chao cheese by Field Roast is soy based and melts to perfection. The consistency, the flavor is all there. It is a bit expensive but when you are craving a grilled cheese with a fury, this will satisfy that craving without the dairy.

Cheese sauces are readily available online in recipe groups. I’ll give you my favorite cheese sauce for mac and cheese (without the dairy) in one of my comfort food recipes coming up. I use this sauce in many dishes, not just mac and cheese. It is great on baked potatoes and broccoli.

Eggs: Substituting eggs is one of the easiest replacements to make. Instead of making an egg scramble, try a tofu scramble. My favorite recipe is coming up. With the right seasonings, you’ll never miss an egg scramble again.

For baking, eggs serve as a binder. Here are some of my favorite replacements.

Good substitutions for eggs include applesauce, pureed soft tofu, Ener-G egg replacer, a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flax seeds plus 2 tablespoons water or other liquid, blended), or mashed bananas. You’ll have to experiment with your recipe to see what works best for you.

In meatloaf you can use oat or soy flour, rolled oats, cooked oatmeal, bread crumbs, instant potato flakes, nut butters, tomato paste, or cornstarch.

Chickpea flour can make a great omelet, and aquafaba is an easy choice for making recipes that originally call for egg whites, like mousse and meringue.

Butter: Many people replace their table butter with Earth Balance. There is a soy free option as well as other oil based solutions to meet the most discerning need.

In baking, many choose to use coconut oil as a replacement in a one to one ratio. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of butter, you’d use 1 cup of coconut oil.

Yogurt: There are many options available for plant based yogurts, including coconut, soy, and almond.

Sour Cream: I like to use a plain, unsweetened coconut yogurt as a replacement for sour cream. I cannot taste the difference.

Mayonnaise: There are quite a few vegan mayonnaise choices on the market or you can make your own with aquafaba.

Gelatin: If you have a recipe that calls for gelatin, you can replace it with agar flakes. There are some vegan brands of gelatin available in bigger markets or look online.

Honey: Plant based choices to replace honey include maple syrup, agave syrup, brown rice syrup, and concentrated fruit syrups.

Sugar: Unfortunately not even sugar is vegan because of how it is processed. White sugar is processed using bone char from animals. Other great alternatives include: beet sugar, fructose, natural organic sugar, unbleached cane sugar, turbinado sugar, date sugar, maple crystals, and granulated FruitSource.

Chocolate: There are many options to choose from for vegan chocolate! Thank goodness, or this one would hang me up. I’ve been experimenting with making my own cacao chocolates and I’m happily satisfied.

Meat: Some great alternatives to meat that are now available are veggie deli slices (bologna, ham, turkey, and other flavors), veggie burgers, veggie meatballs, veggie sausage links and patties, veggie bacon, veggie ground “beef,” soy chicken patties and nuggets, veggie meatloaf and Salisbury steak, veggie jerky, and whole turkeys.

Recipes for seitan, eggplant bacon, and lentil loaves are readily available and make a great solution for people who want the texture of meat without the meat consumption.

Ice Cream: Solutions are everywhere for your ice cream habit. There are great coconut ice creams and treats, soy ice cream, rice milk ice creams, almond milk ice creams, and don’t forget about sorbets. My favorite ice cream recipe is included in a later section and I promise you will not be missing this comfort food.

Buttermilk Replacer Recipe:

1 cup of nut or soy milk (unsweetened)
2 Tablespoons of lemon juice

Whisk until blended

Sweetened Condensed Milk Replacer:

2 ½ cups of nut or soy milk
6 Tablespoons vegan margarine
½ cup of sugar
Sprinkle of salt

In 1 pot boil the milk.
In 2nd pot, melt the margarine and then add the sugar and salt.

When both are done, combine and bring to gentle boil, stirring continuously for 5 minutes.

Evaporated Milk:

Bring your choice of nut or soy milk to a boil and let gently simmer for 35 to 40 minutes.

One of the greatest joys and privileges we may experience as herbalists is the ability to share the wisdom of the natural world with others, don’t you agree? We share our creations and herbal advice with friends, family members, and can even spread nature’s magic deeper into our networks through community gardens and more! Although it may not be as obvious, there’s one special population of creatures who can also benefit from herbs: our animals.

Have you ever considered that our animals may have similar stresses and imbalances as we do? In many cases, they live similar lifestyles and may even eat similar foods as their caretakers – it’s not surprising that our pets can experience bouts with digestion issues and stress, too!
Herbs are for everyone – learn how to use them with your pet in our brand new intensive: Herbs for Animals, now live in The Herbarium!

We can use herbalism to care for animals the same way we do for people. It is not always necessary to load our pets up on medications to help them through common ailments; with the right dietary and herbal knowledge, we can support our animal’s wellbeing naturally. Making the choice to use herbs with our animal friends provides a safe, gentle alternative that we can feel confident about!
Discover the herbal holistic approach for animals such as cats, dogs, birds, and more!

In the Herbs for Animals intensive, we’ll be covering important dietary considerations, common ailments, appropriate herbs, as well as the energetic aspects that can help fine-tune our choice of herbs. As with any herbal application, safety and compliance are of paramount importance; through this intensive, you’ll learn tips for dosing and effective administration of herbs to various animals too! However, the physical health of our animal friends is only one part of the equation. As anyone who has had a pet can tell you, animals are highly sensitive and emotional creatures. Ever been in the presence of an anxious dog during a thunderstorm? What about a particularly skittish cat, or an animal who could use a boost of confidence?

We’ll also be diving into flower essences for emotional support as part of our Herbs for Animals intensive. When it comes to the emotional world of animals, flower essences are particularly useful! We’ll be exploring what flower essences are, the situations for which they are particularly suited, and some favorite flower essences to use for animals. This intensive is only available to members of The Herbarium – our robust online reference source for herbalists of all experience levels! The Herbarium membership includes an ever-expanding library of plant monographs, intensives, articles, podcasts, videos, tutorials, and charts, all based on carefully gathered research and the wisdom of many contributing herbalists.

Plant Based Protein per Gram

Vegetables are incredibly high in protein, some even more so than a regular steak or piece of meat. The only way that anyone could be lacking in protein is if they are junk food vegans, which a lot of people fall into this category, too, but remember: No judgment!

Here is a quick view into plant based proteins and how much protein is in plants, per serving. Serving sizes are dependent upon each individual food.

Vegetables
Peas 9g
Potatoes with skin 5g
Mushrooms 5g
Corn 5g
Artichoke 4g
Avocado 4g
Brussel Sprouts 4g
Broccoli 4g
Collard Greens 4g
Fennel 3g
Sweet Potato 3g
Swiss Chard 3g
Kale 2.5g
Asparagus 2g

Green Beans 2g

As you can see, protein can be easily met without much trying, so can iron and all the other minerals. The only vitamin that should be supplemented when going completely vegan is B12. This is only because our soils are depleted of essential B vitamins. Even animals are supplemented with vitamin B, which is how it is in meat.

Birth Control Inhibits Relationship Chemistry?

This week a few of my friends have been talking and raving about a book titled: Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan. So I ran over to Amazon and downloaded the Kindle edition to read.

I found the book interesting and would definitely recommend reading it. Ryan documents history and the human sexual patterns from biblical times until now. One of the main reasons I bought the book was to read about why people cheat. (My ex cheated and our relationship and family dynamic failed because of that.)  I am not someone who can stay with someone who lies, cheats, or betrays. The author has other views on cheating that I personally do not agree with, but I can see how it could work for some.

One of the reasons that Ryan states that people may cheat, I found extremely interesting. Ryan says that birth control pills interfere with the chemistry between us that causes us to pick partners. The scent of a man or woman actually defines our level of compatibility, not only just in the bedroom, but in life. Birth control interferes with the hormones and a woman's scent as well as her ability to gauge her compatibility to her male partner through scent.

Interesting!
It is certainly interesting enough to share with you all.

Ultimate Natural Remedy Guide

This ultimate guide has been in the back of my mind years. This was first published in 2009 as a small book to keep in the medicine cabinet. Now, I've decided to make it public for everyone to utilize and treasure.

I personally practice herbal medicine for myself and my family. I've been lucky to introduce herbal remedies to hundreds of others through my classes.  I strive to provide the best remedies that are effective, timely, and convenient to us.
It has happened in more than one instance, when in a hurried panic to stop slight bleeding, relieve a headache, or help a bruise heal more quickly, I somehow forget all my natural sense! The remedies I spent so much time researching and practicing, when in a rush, escape my mind.

I knew that because of this, I would eventually put together this ultimate list to serve my own needs, and here it is. Perhaps you will find it as indispensable as I. Remember to save it on your favorites and share it so you can find it easily when you need to remember how to handle minor daily issues with natural care.

Perhaps you will find these ideas, suggestions, and tidbits as vital as I do.
I’m not by any means a doctor or qualified to give medical advice. I do believe that a person’s health and healing is a spiritual journey as much as a physical one. This ultimate list is to be considered for educational purposes only.

Hippocrates once said, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”
Below I have organized a shopping list of what I feel are the most important ingredients to always have on hand. This is merely a suggestion and you should make the decisions for you and your family’s needs.

Remember to always consult your doctor when treating any medical issue.
You will notice that some of these things you will probably already have in your kitchen cabinets and if you don’t have it I list my favorite resource and brand in parenthesis behind it.

Most Important
Apple Cider Vinegar (I like this one.)
Chamomile Tea (I’m never without this brand.)
Powered Licorice Root  (My favorite.)
Vitamin C Rich Foods
Honey (My preference.)
Essential Oil of Lavender (My favorite)
Aloe gel or plant
Vitamin E (What I use.)
Witch Hazel Water (My preferred brand.)
Rescue Remedy Cream (I’m never without this.)
Rescue Remedy Drops (I’m never without this, either.)
Lemons
Olive Oil
Epsom Salts (My favorite.)
Colloidal Silver (My preferred brand.)
Garlic
Cayenne
Ginger
Lemon Balm Dried Herb (What I prefer to use.)
Omega 3’s

Bacteria that live in the bowels and near the vaginal openings when spread can enter the urethra and cause infection. Make sure to wipe front to back and teach young children how to properly care for themselves.
Sexual intercourse is another common cause of infection. Urinating before and after intercourse can sometimes prevent an infection.
Pregnancy, diabetes, and menopause are also contributors to frequent UTIs.

Some toothpastes are SLS free:
Breath RX Products
Tom’s of Maine

Nutritional deficiency can also be a source of canker sores.
Consider a vitamin supplement like Thiamin (vitamin B1), as deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of canker sores. 15. EAR ACHE
*Ear candle both ears as directions indicate.

*Cinnamon in olive oil with the same principles as above will work wonders!
*Colloidal Silver is a great resource for ear aches. It can be used by itself (warmed up) or mixed with lavender oil.
There is a lot of controversy over ear candling. Most alternative doctors recommend the practice, while other more Western medicine practitioners strongly discourage it.
I’m not sure whether some practitioners do not understand the concept of candling, as they claim hot wax will drip into one’s ear.
As a user of candles, I don’t see how this is possible. Ear candles should be made of muslin and dipped in wax. When candling, I use a paper plate that catches any wax drippings on the outside.
However, use your best judgment and talk to your physician. While it may not be the best decision for you, ear candling has made a huge difference for my family and me.

16. ENERGY BOOST
*Ginseng tea or supplements may be the most popular in Eastern Medicine to boost one’s energy and stamina.
*Ashwagandha, an Ayurvedic herb in tablet or powder form, is by far my personal favorite to boost energy and focus.
*Coconut oil, full of Omega 3 fatty acids, gives a nice boost of energy by adding just a teaspoon to any hot tea beverage.
Have you heard of acupressure that will give you an immediate energy boost?
Traditional Chinese Medicine employs acupuncture which has recently gained much attention and is now considered a complementing therapy to many drug therapies and covered by most insurances.
There are spots located on the head, neck, front and back body that when pressure is applied, it will immediately stimulate an internal energy.
To read more about acupressure and understand the benefits of acupressure and how you can benefit from this needle free version of acupuncture, grab a copy of The Acupressure Atlas.

17. FEVER
*Catnip will promote sweating and therefore increase the benefits of a fever.
*Echinacea will help break a fever by boosting immunity.
*Hyssop, licorice root, and thyme make an excellent tea to lower temperature.
*Stay hydrated with filtered water for best absorption benefit.
Did you know that the degree of a temperature is not an indicator of how severe the problem is?
A fever is the body’s way of fighting an infection. By rising the temperature, making the body a deadly host to the virus or bacteria causing the fever, the body creates an environment where a virus or bacteria cannot live.
Most fevers will break in a few days and most fevers are better off left without treatment. However, there are circumstances when you should seek medical attention for you or your child with a fever.
Any newborn with a fever should be seen by a doctor immediately as a young baby cannot regulate their own temperature.
Whenever a fever is accompanied by severe vomiting, lethargy, or confusion, it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately. For a complete list of symptoms and a checklist to help you make a good decision, please contact your family physician.

18. FLU
*Colloidal Silver is the most powerful natural tool against viruses. It stops viruses in their tracks.
*Garlic will decrease the growth of a virus and can be taken as a freeze dried capsule or chopped up and steeped in boiling water to make a tea.
*Do not eat while a flu virus is actively growing. Starve the virus.
*Drink plenty of fluids and filtered water.

Have A Hobby You Love

19. GUMS

20. HANGOVER
*A tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot water to sip has been an old remedy with bartenders for years.
*Gingko Biloba has been used in other countries as an effective drunkenness preventer and hangover healer. It is said to speed up the metabolism of alcohol.
*Ginseng is another herb that is used for hangover relief in other countries. Ginseng is available in teas and capsules.
Did you know in Ireland it was said to bury the person hung over in moist sand up to their neck?
A Little Humor
A guy goes into a bar and continues to drink until he is really drunk. As he begins to walk home, every two steps he falls flat on his face. 2 steps away from his doorway and he falls inside. Unable to walk, he crawls up the stairs and into his bed.
In the morning his wife gets up before him and says "Were you drinking last night?"
He asks, "How did you know?"
She says, "You left your wheelchair at the bar, again."

21. HEADACHES
*Make sure the headache is not from dehydration. Drink water with lemon to balance pH.
*Take a high quality mineral supplement.
*Take a B complex vitamin supplement.
*Feverfew taken as a tea or as a supplement can prove effective for headaches of all kinds.
*Ginkgo Biloba as a supplement is proven to be a beneficial addition to headache therapy.
Did you know there are 5 types of headaches?
Tension headaches feel like a constant ache or pressure located somewhere on the head.
Cluster headaches are headaches that occur in groups or cycles.
Rebound headaches happen when a person has taken too much over the counter medicine, like aspirin or acetaminophen, which will lead to waking up with a headache the next day.
Migraine headaches come from a neurological disorder that is likely hereditary.
Sinus headaches happen when the sinuses become inflamed. This is usually accompanied by a fever.

22. INDIGESTION & Heartburn
*Cinnamon added to any tea can prevent and relieve bloating, gas, and cramping associated with gas.
*Dandelion tea is a great liver tonic and can relieve gas immediately.
*Ginger, either added to food as a preventable measure or taken as a steeped tea after is a very effective remedy.
TIPS TO AVOID HEARTBURN/Indigestion
Do not eat 2 hours before going to bed.
Eat smaller & more frequent meals.
Avoid mint teas & flavorings.
Chew a non-mint gum.
Eat foods rich in fiber.
Avoid smoking & alcohol.
Do not eat on the run.
Relax and allow yourself to enjoy your food.
Do not allow your stomach to become too empty, keep fiber rich fruits & whole grain snacks on hand.

23. INSOMNIA
*Chamomile tea is a nice relaxing tea and will soothe one’s physical self as well as emotional.
*St. John’s Wort is an excellent herb to use to help with insomnia due to stress.
*California Poppy has been used as a mild sedative and is quite effective. Be careful not to overuse.
COMMON CAUSES OF INSOMNIA
Stress
Anxiety
Depression
Poor Sleeping Habits
Learned Insomnia (worrying too much about sleep)
Overeating
Medications
Stimulants (caffeine, alcohol, & nicotine)

24. MENSTRUAL PAIN
*All of the following herbs can be used to help with menstrual pain in tea form: Black Haw, Angelica, Raspberry, Ginger, Red Clover, and Yarrow.
*Taking a high quality mineral supplement can be very beneficial.
*If on birth control pills, it is important to increase your levels of folate (Vitamin B Complex) in the diet as birth control pills can prevent the absorption of many minerals.
There is no scientific study that I’m aware of to back up what I’m about to share, so please read my personal story and make your own decision.
I have had horrible menstrual cramping for the majority of my life. I used birth control pills to control my periods and cramping for the longest time before the concern of extensive chemical use was more of a concern than cramping. (This decision almost killed me as I later found it increased my personal risk of stroke by 40% because I had an undiagnosed PFO.)
By experimentation, I cut out the use of chemical forms of estrogen that are in our foods and beauty products, disguised as preservatives.
Hormones given to dairy cows have been linked to early puberty and something in me just knows that having bad periods is also linked.
Since I have cut out parabens, sulfates, nitrates, and xenoestrogens, I no longer suffer from cramping.
I encourage every woman to experiment and try natural ways of being. Some natural methods may work better than chemical versions, while some may not. I think we owe it to our health and our daughter’s health to find the healthiest ways of being.

25. MUSCLE PAIN
*Eat a banana.
*Soak in a bath of Epsom salts, 2 cups to a hot bath, while drinking a cup of chamomile tea.
*Use a rosemary wash
*Use All Heal Oil topically on your sore muscles and joints
ROSEMARY WASH
Ingredients:
1 ounce Rosemary Leaves
Boiling Water
In a pot, bring 2 pints of water to a boil. After it is boiling rapidly, remove it from heat and add dried or fresh rosemary leaves.
Cover to steep and cool for at least 30 minutes.
Wet washcloth with the rosemary wash and place on sore muscles as needed.

26. NAUSEA
*Ginger is a great nausea suppressant; either by fresh ginger cut up and steeped in hot water to drink as tea, or by organic and real ginger ale.
*Make a tea of ginger, cinnamon, chamomile, and lemon balm.
TEA FOR NAUSEA
Making a tea decoction is really a simple endeavor that you will reap rewards from for the rest of your life!
I personally like to cut up fresh pieces of ginger and place them in the bottom of a cup ready for my special ingredients.
For nausea, I add cinnamon, some dried chamomile and lemon balm leaves in a tea strainer. I like about ½ teaspoon of each.
I boil my water and pour through my tea strainer. I cover it, which prevents many of the nutrients and benefits of the herbs from evaporating with the steam.
I like to sweeten with honey or maple syrup. If fructose intake is a concern maybe try some agave nectar which does not raise the glycemic index like honey and syrups do.
With this basic understanding, you can vary herbs to your needs.

28. RELAXATION
*Herbs that will help one relax while under stressful situations are: valerian, skullcap, and chamomile. These may be taken as supplements or incorporated into a loose leaf tea.
*Take a bath with sea salts.
*Aromatherapy essential oils of lavender can be placed on pulse points as well as burned over a candle for a larger area.
MEDITATION
Meditation has numerous benefits; pure rest and relaxation are only the beginning on the list!
Some other benefits of meditation are:
Reduced Stress
Lower Levels of Anxiety & Depression
Control over Negative Thinking
Detachment from Irritations
Purposeful Living
Intuitive Development
Increased Creativity
Increased Concentration
Sense of Happiness
Peace of Mind
Meditation has been said to have just as powerful effects on high blood pressure as some medications!

30. RUNNY NOSE
*Goldenseal can clear mucous from the throat.
*The following herbs can make an excellent tea to clear up a runny nose: ¼ tsp of cayenne will stimulate circulation, cinnamon (stick or ground), fresh ginger grated.
*The Ayurvedic tool, Neti Pot, is one of my favorite remedies for runny noses and all sinus issues.
BREATHE DEEPLY
Did you know that learning to breathe more effectively could help clear your nose, sinuses and possibly prevent cold viruses from taking home in your body?
Yoga and breath have been linked for centuries and only recently has breathing been seen as a possible tool for the common cold!
With a minor case of the sniffles try this: Breathe deeply and slowly in through your nose, filling up your diaphragm. You should feel your diaphragm expand and your stomach area should physically expand.
If your shoulders move, you are not breathing deeply enough, only allow breath to be sucked in from your stomach area and pushed out through your stomach area.
Release the breath slowly through your nose and repeat.

31. SORE THROAT
*Chamomile tea is a great soother of the sore throat.
*Adding grated ginger to any food or to tea will benefit a sore throat.
*Apple cider vinegar is an excellent remedy!
*Adding lemon to water can balance pH and help clear up the source of the sore throat!
*Gargling with warm salt water can soothe an irritated throat for any reason and is a great preventative technique for colds and flu.
SORE THROAT GARGLE

34. TOXIN REMOVAL
Removing toxins on a regular basis has been said to prevent many uncomfortable symptoms and can be viewed as preventative medicine by some people. There are so many diverse ways to remove toxins that I’m going to list my favorites. For more ideas, please visit AlcheMysticArts.com!
*Drink 8-10 glasses of water with a wedge of organic lemon squeezed in each glass.
*Triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal mixture, is known to help detoxify.
*Chamomile tea is one of the greatest detoxification teas in my opinion!
*Sea salt baths are another great resource for detoxification! After soaking, it may be best to rinse off in a quick shower, as the salt seems to draw out toxins and could be reabsorbed into the skin.
*Taking a mineral supplement can help all your organs perform at their best. Trace minerals are not found in a normal diet and should be supplemented.
*Exercise not only trims muscles but aids in the detoxification of muscles and joints! Have you ever noticed an itching feeling after exercising? That is a toxin release and why it is important to shower after exercise to prevent re-absorption.
*Sauna, sauna, sauna! If you are serious about detoxification, a sauna is a must have.

35. WART
*Tea tree essential oil applied directly to the wart 2-3 times a day with a cotton swab has been said to be a very effective means of wart removal. It is recorded to be effective within 10 days.
*Protecting the skin and surrounding skin with Vitamin E and preparing a mash of garlic to apply directly after the Vitamin E application is known to cause a blister on the wart which will fall off within a week.
*Calendula & St. John’s Wort tea, brewed strongly is said to be an excellent remedy!
Did you know that warts are a common skin virus caused by the Human Papillomavirus or HPV?
There are over 100 strains of HPV, some that cause genital warts, some that cause hand warts, and some strains cause both!
You can be introduced to the HPV virus by shaking hands, sharing towels, or touching an inanimate object where another wart sufferer has been.
You can prevent the HPV virus from spreading by washing your hands and practicing safe sex.
HPV is more likely to cause warts after it has come into contact with skin that has been scratched or damaged.

36. WOUND CLEANING & HEALING
